April Ballard Car Accident Death obituary

The Leeds community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of April Ballard, 37, who died in a tragic wrong-way crash early Friday morning, April 24, along Interstate 65 in Pelham.

According to the Shelby County Coroner’s Office, Ballard was driving a truck southbound when it entered the northbound lanes of I-65 at approximately 3:00 a.m. The vehicle then collided head-on with a 2012 Honda Accord driven by 20-year-old Jesse Southard of Birmingham.

The impact of the crash was severe, resulting in fatal injuries for both drivers. Authorities confirmed that Ballard was pronounced dead at the scene, while Southard also lost his life as a result of the collision.

The incident led to a complete shutdown of the northbound lanes of Interstate 65 between the Tank Farm exit and the Oak Mountain State Park exit for several hours. Emergency crews remained on-site throughout the early morning, working to secure the area, manage the aftermath, and begin investigating the cause of the crash.
