Deangelo Roberson Shooting News Death Obituary
The Augusta community is grieving the tragic death of 10-year-old Deangelo Roberson, who died Friday at 11:46 a.m. at Wellstar MCG Health, according to Coroner Mark Bowen. His passing followed a devastating shooting earlier in the week that left him critically injured.
Authorities say the incident occurred Tuesday outside a convenience store on Gordon Highway. Deangelo was sitting inside a parked vehicle with his siblings, ages 9 and 4, while their mother, 27-year-old Deasia Lexis Williams, went inside the store. Investigators report that during that time, the youngest child gained access to a firearm allegedly left inside Williams’ purse.
Police say the weapon discharged inside the vehicle, striking Deangelo in the head and causing severe injuries. Emergency responders arrived quickly and transported him to the hospital, where he remained in critical condition for several days before succumbing to his injuries.
Williams has since been arrested and charged with three counts of second-degree cruelty to children, one charge for each child who was reportedly left unattended in the vehicle. Authorities allege the children were placed in a dangerous situation due to the unsecured firearm. She is currently being held at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center while the investigation continues.
The heartbreaking incident has deeply affected the Augusta community, leaving residents, friends, and loved ones mourning the loss of a young life. Those who knew Deangelo remember him fondly, and many are struggling to comprehend how such a tragedy could occur.
Investigators continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the shooting as officials work to determine all contributing factors. Meanwhile, the community has come together in grief and remembrance, honoring Deangelo Roberson and supporting his family during an incredibly painful time.
