Justis Barnhouse Arrested After Shooting Leaves Joshua May Dead

Just hours after a violent disturbance unsettled a quiet Beatrice neighborhood, law enforcement officials arrested a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Joshua May, an incident that has left the community shaken and searching for clarity.

The situation began in the early hours of Tuesday morning when authorities received multiple 911 calls from residents near 9th and Summit Streets. Callers reported hearing distressing sounds, including screams and loud banging, prompting an immediate police response. Officers arrived quickly on scene, uncertain of what they would find.

Upon arrival, they discovered Joshua May lying in a grassy area near the sidewalk, suffering from severe injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. First responders provided emergency medical care at the scene before transporting him to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, May later died from his injuries, marking a tragic end to the unfolding incident.

Following the discovery, investigators launched an urgent and coordinated response involving multiple agencies. Local, state, and federal law enforcement resources were brought in to assist, with the primary focus on identifying the person responsible and ensuring there was no ongoing threat to the community.

Attention soon shifted to 31-year-old Justis Barnhouse of Beatrice, who investigators identified as a suspect in the shooting. Authorities worked quickly to locate him, relying on coordinated investigative efforts and leads developed through the early stages of the case.

By later that day, Barnhouse was located in Lincoln and taken into custody on an outstanding warrant connected to the shooting. His arrest marked a significant development in the case, though it did not immediately provide answers to the broader questions surrounding the motive or circumstances behind the violence.

Barnhouse now faces multiple felony charges, including second-degree murder and weapons-related offenses. Officials have emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing and that additional details may emerge as evidence is reviewed and witness statements are gathered.

At this stage, authorities have not publicly disclosed a clear motive for the shooting. Investigators continue to examine what led to the confrontation between Barnhouse and Joshua May, carefully working to reconstruct the timeline of events that unfolded during the early morning hours.

For residents of the neighborhood, the incident has left a lasting sense of shock and unease. A familiar area has been overshadowed by a sudden act of violence that claimed a life without warning, leaving the community grappling with grief and uncertainty.

Law enforcement officials say they remain committed to fully resolving the case and encourage anyone with additional information to come forward as they continue working to close the remaining gaps in the investigation.
