Braden and Braxton Canterberry Car Accident Death Obituary

A profound sense of grief has settled over Marion County after a tragic single-vehicle accident claimed the lives of 17-year-old Braden Canterberry and 20-year-old Braxton Canterberry. Their sudden deaths have left family members, friends, and the Brilliant community mourning an overwhelming loss.

According to authorities, the crash occurred early Wednesday morning after deputies responded around 2:00 a.m. to reports of teenagers gathering and consuming alcohol near a location commonly referred to as the “gravel pit” on County Road 36, also known locally as Jasper Hill.

While traveling through the area, deputies reportedly noticed a silver Toyota 4Runner moving at a high speed. Officials stated that emergency lights were activated, though deputies did not pursue the vehicle. Shortly afterward, officers lost sight of the SUV while continuing patrol operations nearby.

Not long after, deputies discovered the same vehicle involved in a severe single-car crash. Investigators said three people were inside at the time of the wreck, and all occupants were ejected during the impact, highlighting the force of the collision.

Both Braden and Braxton died at the scene. Braden, a senior at Brilliant High School, is remembered as a young student with a promising future ahead. Braxton, known by many throughout the community, also leaves behind grieving loved ones struggling to cope with the tragedy.

An 18-year-old passenger survived but sustained critical injuries and was flown to UAB Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Authorities have not released further updates regarding the survivor’s condition.

As news spread across the area, many residents expressed shock and sadness. Brilliant Police Chief Skylar Handley shared that all three individuals were familiar faces within the community, making the loss especially personal for local families and classmates.

Brilliant High School released a statement expressing sympathy to the families and announced that counseling resources would be available to support students and staff during this difficult time. Community members later gathered near the crash site to remember Braden and Braxton, offering tributes and comfort to one another.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash remains ongoing as Marion County continues to grieve the loss of two young lives taken far too soon.
