Former Nigeria striker Michael Eneramo dies Unexpectedly during match

Former Nigeria international Michael Eneramo has died at the age of 40 after collapsing during a friendly football match in Kaduna, reportedly due to a suspected cardiac arrest.

According to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Eneramo fell on the pitch about five minutes into the second half of the game on Friday. Medical personnel responded immediately after he collapsed, but he could not be revived.

Eneramo, who earned 10 caps for the Nigeria national football team, had a respected professional career spanning several countries, including Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. He was widely admired for his physical strength, aggressive playing style, and consistent goal-scoring ability.

The NFF described his passing as “devastating,” with officials and former teammates expressing shock and sadness at the sudden loss. Eneramo was especially well known for his successful spell with Tunisian club Espérance Sportive de Tunis, where fans nicknamed him “The Tank” due to his powerful presence on the field and ability to dominate defenders.

During his international career, Eneramo played an important role in Nigeria’s 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, including scoring in a key 2–2 draw against Tunisia that helped secure Nigeria’s place in the tournament in South Africa. Despite his contributions, he was not included in the final World Cup squad.

Football officials and fans across Africa have paid tribute to Eneramo, highlighting both his achievements and his impact on the game. His death adds to a tragic list of African players who have collapsed during matches, including Marc-Vivien Foé, Cheick Tioté, and Raphael Dwamena, all of whom also died from suspected heart-related incidents on the pitch.

His passing has renewed conversations in football about player health, cardiac screening, and emergency preparedness during matches, particularly in African football systems where resources can vary widely.

The NFF said Eneramo will be remembered for his strength, dedication, and the lasting mark he left on Nigerian football.
