Judy C. Downs Killed in Head-On Two-Vehicle Crash on Alabama Highway 189 North of Elba in Coffee County

A fatal two-vehicle crash in Coffee County has left one woman dead and another driver seriously injured, with authorities continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

According to the Coffee County Coroner’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 4:17 p.m. on April 24 along Alabama Highway 189, just north of Elba, Alabama. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene after reports of a head-on collision involving two vehicles. Officials confirmed that Judy C. Downs was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:45 p.m., following fatal injuries sustained in the crash.

The second driver suffered significant injuries and was airlifted by Enterprise Rescue Air2 to a trauma center in Montgomery for urgent medical treatment. Their current condition has not been released.

Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash. Investigators are actively working to establish how the collision occurred, including whether factors such as speed, distraction, impairment, or roadway conditions played a role. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is expected to assist in reconstructing the events leading up to the impact.

The crash took place on a rural stretch of Alabama Highway 189, a two-lane roadway north of Elba. Head-on collisions on roads like this are often especially severe due to the limited separation between opposing lanes and the high combined impact forces when vehicles collide.

Emergency crews remained on scene for several hours, closing the highway while they conducted an investigation and cleared debris. The closure caused delays for local traffic, though officials emphasized that the priority was determining the cause of the crash and ensuring the safety of responders.

Judy C. Downs, a resident of the Elba area, was remembered by those who knew her as a valued member of the community. Her death has left family and friends in deep mourning as they come to terms with the sudden loss.

The Coffee County Coroner’s Office has extended condolences to her loved ones, and officials have asked the public to keep both families affected by the crash in their thoughts during this difficult time.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution, especially on rural highways where head-on collisions can have devastating consequences.
